VACCINES AND TRAVEL HEALTH ADVICE FOR CHINA

Traveling to China

China is a country with a rich cultural heritage and stunning natural landscapes, which make it a popular tourist destination.

WHAT ARE THE RECOMMENDED VACCINES FOR CHINA?

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that travelers to China be up to date on routine vaccinations, such as measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis vaccine, varicella (chickenpox) vaccine, polio vaccine, and flu vaccine.

In addition to routine vaccinations, the CDC also recommends several other vaccines for you when you travel to China,  depending on your specific travel plans and activities. These vaccines include:

Hepatitis A Icon
Hepatitis A

The CDC recommends the hepatitis A vaccine for all travelers to China, as the disease can be contracted through contaminated food or water.

Hepatitis B Icon
Hepatitis B

The hepatitis B vaccine is also recommended for travelers to China, particularly those who may have sexual contact with local residents or require medical procedures during their trip.

Typhoid

The typhoid vaccine is recommended for travelers to China who may have exposure to contaminated food or water.

Malaria Icon
Japanese encephalitis

This vaccine is recommended for travelers who plan to spend a month or more in rural areas or who plan to participate in outdoor activities.

It’s important to note that the specific vaccine recommendations may vary depending on your individual health status, age, and itinerary. When you consult with our travel healthcare provider  at the travel vaccine clinic in Toronto or the travel vaccine clinic in North York, before traveling to China, we will determine the most appropriate vaccinations and other health precautions specifically for you.

WHAT ARE THE RECOMMENDED MEDICATIONS FOR CHINA?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) does not generally recommend specific medications for travelers to China. However, it’s always a good idea to bring along any prescription medications that you regularly take, along with a sufficient supply to last for the duration of your trip.

If you have a chronic medical condition, it’s also important to bring along any necessary medications, such as insulin, blood pressure medications, or asthma inhalers. It’s also a good idea to bring along a copy of your prescription or a letter from your doctor explaining your medical condition and the medications you require.

In addition to any necessary medications, it’s also a good idea to pack a basic travel health kit, which may include items such as pain relievers, antihistamines, anti-diarrheal medication, and topical antibiotic ointment. You may also want to consider bringing along insect repellent, sunscreen, and other items depending on your specific travel plans and itinerary.

When you consult with our travel healthcare provider at our travel vaccine clinic located in North York or in Toronto, before traveling to China, we will discuss any specific health concerns or recommended medications for you. We  can provide personalized advice and recommendations based on your individual health status and travel plans.

WHAT SHOULD I KNOW BEFORE TRAVELING TO CHINA?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provides the following general health and safety information for travelers to China:

Get vaccinated

Make sure you are up to date on routine vaccinations, as well as any additional vaccines recommended for China, such as hepatitis A and B, typhoid, and Japanese encephalitis.

Stay healthy

To avoid getting sick, practice good hygiene, such as washing your hands frequently and avoiding contact with sick people. Be careful with food and water, and only eat well-cooked foods and drink bottled or boiled water.

Be prepared for air pollution

Many cities in China experience high levels of air pollution, particularly during the winter months. Consider bringing along a face mask or other protective gear, and limit outdoor activities when pollution levels are high.

Stay safe

Be aware of your surroundings, and take steps to protect yourself from crime and scams. Avoid demonstrating support for sensitive political or social issues, as this could lead to legal or other difficulties.

Be prepared for natural disasters

China is prone to earthquakes, floods, and other natural disasters. Make sure you know what to do in the event of an emergency, and stay informed about local conditions and any warnings or alerts.

Plan for medical emergencies

Make sure you have adequate travel health insurance, and bring along any necessary medications and medical supplies. Be prepared for the possibility of language barriers when seeking medical care.
