You are planning a trip to Costa Rica, you ask yourself, what vaccinations do I need for Costa Rica?

Costa Rica vaccinations and travel advice

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the following vaccines are recommended for travelers to Costa Rica:

Hepatitis A

The CDC recommends the Hepatitis A vaccine for most travelers to Costa Rica, as this disease can be contracted through contaminated food or water.

The Hepatitis B vaccine is recommended for travelers who may have sexual contact with locals or may be exposed to blood or bodily fluids, such as healthcare workers.

Typhoid

The Typhoid vaccine is recommended for travelers who may be eating or drinking outside of major restaurants and hotels, as this disease is contracted through contaminated food or water.

Routine vaccines

Make sure you are up to date on routine vaccinations, such as measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis vaccine, varicella (chickenpox) vaccine, polio vaccine, and your yearly flu shot.

Rabies

The Rabies vaccine is recommended for travelers who may be at risk of animal bites or may be involved in outdoor activities in remote areas where medical care may not be readily available.

Medications for travelers to Costa Rica:

Malaria

If you are traveling to certain areas of Costa Rica, especially in the rural areas of Limón and Puntarenas, you may be at risk for malaria. Our travel health care provider may recommend antimalarial medication based on your travel itinerary and other individual factors.

Diarrhea

Traveler’s diarrhea is a common health concern for visitors to Costa Rica.  During your travel health consultation at the travel clinic we can discuss with you how to prevent and how to treat symptoms of diarrhea.

Motion sickness

If you plan to travel by boat or car, you may want to bring motion sickness medication to prevent nausea and vomiting.

Altitude sickness

If you plan to visit high-altitude destinations such as Monteverde, you may be at risk for altitude sickness. Our travel health care providers may recommend medications during your consultation at the Travel Vaccine Clinic

Sunburn

The sun can be strong in Costa Rica, especially at high altitudes or in the coastal areas. Bring a sunscreen with a high SPF, and consider packing aloe vera gel or other treatments for sunburns.

Altitude sickness

If you plan to visit high-altitude destinations such as Monteverde, you may be at risk for altitude sickness.

Yellow fever

If you are traveling from a country with a risk of yellow fever transmission, you may be required to show proof of yellow fever vaccination to enter Costa Rica.
